2015 Frankfurt – IAA: Porsche reveals the Mission E Concept to rival Tesla
The production competition between Tesla Motors and the luxury brands is heating up more than ever, especially with Porsche, who revealed their highly-anticipated luxury EV competitor to the small California-based firm.
Meet the all-new, sexy Porsche Mission E Concept, a Tesla Model S competitor from Germany’s prancing horse that boasts more than 600hp and a range of over 300 miles, making the examples like the P85D quiver in its tracks.
Revealed a little earlier today at the Volkswagen Group Night evening, Porsche revealed the Mission E Concept, which they also say recharges at a speed that’s nearly just as fast as it goes. The Mission E is capable of approximately an 80 percent recharge in just 15 minutes, about 248 miles of traveling distance.
How does this happen? An 800-volt electric drive system consists of two synchronous electric motors, similar to the ones used in the winning 919 hybrid race car from the last 24 Hours of Le Mans. Zuffenhausen also claims its one of the lighter systems in terms of weight, thanks to extremely small wire gauging.
Full performance figures weren’t published, though Porsche says the Mission E Concept was able to lap the Nurburgring in just eight minutes, making it one of the fastest four-doors around The Green Hell.
The battery packs sit low and in the center of the platform to optimize the center of gravity. Speaking of which, that platform is made up of a complex mixture of aluminum, steel, and carbon fiber with accompanying massive 21-inch carbon fiber wheels at the front and 22-inch at the back. Overall, thanks to the clever design, the Mission E sits no higher than a standard 911.
No production plans were revealed, but by making such a statement like this one, Porsche would be a bit foolish to not follow up with a production version of the Mission E. And if anything, we can definitely bet our money that the next Porsche Panamera will be heavily inspired stylistically by this new Mission E.
For the press blast, check it out after the jump.
