Recalls: The 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt recalled in US and Canada for non-deploying airbags

More recalls continue to haunt General Motors, mainly this time, with Chevrolet and the 2010 Cobalt.

Besides the fact that we feel terribly sorry for anyone who decided to subject themselves to the abomination of a Chevrolet Cobalt and its ownership, we’re still encouraging those with affected cars to get them repairs for non-deploying airbags, which is what this current recall is being issued for.

According to the NHTSA statement, 73,424 examples of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt in the US and Canada are being recalled for airbags that possibly won’t deploy in the event of a collision. Specific models affected were built between January 4 and June 23, 2010. Of those 73,424 units, 59,474 of them were sold in the US.

So far, General Motors is aware of one crash with one injury related to this issue.

The issue lies with improper routing of the side-impact sensor in the wiring harness located in the driver’s door. A short circuit can occur and cause the airbag to malfunction. The campaign to fix this is expected to commence on August 26 and dealers will fix the issue, free of cost.

Manufacturer: General Motors LLC

SUMMARY:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt vehicles manufactured January 4, 2010, to June 23, 2010. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an improperly routed Side-Impact Sensor (SIS) wiring harness in the driver side front door. The misrouted wiring harness could cause an electrical short that disables the driver side curtain air bag.

CONSEQUENCE:
A disabled driver side roof-rail air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of that air bag, increasing the risk of injury to the driver.

REMEDY:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the sensor’s wiring in the driver’s door and make repairs as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 26, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is 15075.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
