Report: The next-gen Mercedes-AMG E63 sedan could break the 600hp mark

Even with the tight crunch on fuel economy and CO2 emissions, the horsepower wars are still not over and are basically the automobile industry’s version of the Cold War.

Further emphasizing this is a new report fromĀ AutoCar, who learned that the next-gen Mercedes-AMG E63 Sedan might break the 600hp mark. Currently, the E63 produces aroundĀ 577hp from its 5.5L twin-turbocharged V8 and is the only version available. That allows for a blitzkrieg sprint from 0-60 in just 3.5 seconds.

Any more power, and you’d think the wheels would just spin.

But that wouldn’t be the case since the E63 AMG will be offered solely with 4MATIC all-wheel drive like the current model, according to AMG’s boss, Tobias Moers. Chances are that the new E63 will use Benz’s latest nine-speed automatic as well in place of the current 7G-TRONIC seven-speed box.

Expect a debut of the new E-Class at the Detroit Auto Show in January of next year with the AMG version following later in the year.
