Report: The next-gen BMW 4-Series Convertible to ditch its folding hardtop

Folding hardtop convertibles were the ish back in the 2000s, but at a serious compromise in weight and complexity. This affected handling performance as a result, adding some several hundred pounds to some car’s curb weights when compared to their fixed-roof siblings.

Some include the Mazda Miata, which no longer comes with a power folding hardtop, and the last BMW 3-Series convertible and current 4-Series droptop.

Speaking of which, the next-generation 4-Series Convertible may ditch its current folding hardtop for a soft one as well, claims BMW enthusiasts’ site, BimmerToday. And while this would be a blessing from the petrolhead gods from above, this is only to be taken as a rumor with a grain of salt. Regardless, we hope it’s a rumor that would hold to be true.

The new 4-Series is internally coded the G23 model and is said to be ready by 2021.
