Report: Is Audi mulling a new baby-R8?

Automobile got wind of a possible new sports car from Audi, which may potentially take up the role as a baby-R8.

According to the report, Audi seeks to move the TT downmarket and make it more affordable to make room for a potential new midrange, mid-engined sports car.

Speculatively dubbed the R5, this new model may be based off of the e-tron concept, a smaller, lighter and electrified version of the R8–except the electrified part–with the backbone being provided by Audi’s latest mid-engined variant to the MQB modular platform. Power is said to be provided by a 2.5L TFSI motor, complete with quattro all-wheel drive.

Back on the TT side, Audi plans to move the TT line downmarket, so as to offer up potential crossover variants as well, in addition to a new entry-level model.
