Report: BMW axes Z2 project

CAR Magazine in the UK reports that BMW is apparently shelving the Z2 project, which was supposed to give birth to a new subcompact roadster with an easy starting price.

Originally, the new Z2 was supposed to be built off of BMW’s current modular front-wheel drive platform, the same one underpinning the entire Mini brand, but after speaking with executives within BMW, word is the project was dropped after new leadership.

This is apparently due to the fact that BMW’s team learned that the sports car market is shrinking because customers prefer more crossover and SUV choices. Another factor was the plan to put Mini’s Superleggera Vision Concept into production.
