Report: Mazda Miata-based Fiat 124 Spider successor to surface later this year

Rumors of a Mazda-Fiat convertible collaboration have been floating around for quite some time.

Now, Edmunds reports that it’ll actually happen: there will be a new Fiat 124 Spider based off of the new 2016 Mazda Miata.

Due for a revealing at either Frankfurt or Los Angeles later this year, the new 124 is destined to go on sale sometime in 2016.

Not much is known about the car, but the deal was struck because Mazda is making waves with their uber-lightweight Miata, which in Fiat’s eyes, provides a solid foundation for a new roadster on their end.

Instead of Mazda SKYACTIV-G fours, Fiat’s own 1.4L MultiAir four is expected to find its way under the hood.
