Report: BMW files for X2 trademark, could suggest new subcompact crossover

BMW could be in the works with a new subcompact crossover called the X2 Sport as a filing for a trademark was recently discovered. In 2012, BMW filed a request for just the “X2” name, so this new addition could suggest BMW’s future subcompact crossover could have multiple variants.

Details aren’t exactly plentiful, but speculation hints at the possibility of there being both a three-door and five-door version available. The new X2 is destined to be sourced from BMW’s latest UKL modular platform, the same one being used for Mini’s entire lineup, the new front-wheel drive 1-Series and all of its variants, as well as a new generation of X1.

The standard X2 five-door is expected to surface sometime in 2017 with a choice of three- and four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. A more powerful and sportier version should also be in the mix along with a plug-in hybrid model.
