Report: Audi to drop the V8 for its RS4, sadly

The demand for greater fuel economy seems to be killing the V8 and lately, Audi’s been stringent on its offerings of V8s, simply because they’ve found more economical alternatives, at least on paper.

Continuing the trend is the next RS4 wagon estate and while we don’t receive that model here in the states, it’s still sad to hear that rumors suggest the RS4 could lose its V8 entirely.

Australia’s Motoring is back with the supposed details after speaking with Quattro GmbH’s managing director, Heinz Hollerweger. According to Mr. Heinz, the 4.2L V8 current offered in the RS4 should be replaced by a turbocharged V6. This suggests the engine could receive Audi’s new electric turbo, which showcased on the RS5 TDI Concept and is expected to launch in the SQ7.

The V8 won’t entirely disappear however, as Heinz also said the next generation RS6 and the R8 are to continue receiving Audi’s V8 while sedan versions of both the RS4 and the RS6 are also a possibility.
