Report: Mercedes-Benz working on e-turbo engines

Australia’s Drive is getting the scoop on some apparent new powertrains with Mercedes-Benz, after speaking with AMG’s powertrain chief, Jochen Martin Schmid, who said the company may be working on electric turbochargers. Recently, Audi was rumored to be working with the same technology as automakers continue to onslaught on fuel economy.

“There are many companies looking into this technology right now and it is something we will investigate at some time to see the benefits,” Schmid told Drive. Though Schmid didn’t say which models may receive the tech first.

Audi’s been researching and developing the concept for some time, beginning with the RS5 TDI Concept, and even in their Le Mans race cars. Theirs is said to debut on the next generation Q7 in either 2015 or 2016.
