Report: Porsche is working on a quad-turbo flat-eight sports car

Get this–Porsche is working on a new sports car that will sport a quad-turbo, flat-eight cylinder engine.

The rumor heralds in from AutoCar, who recently learned that this new and rather radical plan is to build a direct competitor against Ferrari’s lovely 458 Italia, and it’s currently codenamed as the 988.

According to the report, Porsche has reached a power threshold with the boxer-six and as a result, their next idea is to add two more cylinders. Porsche is also no stranger to producing a flat-eight as they did so for their original and famous Formula One racer, the 908. An actual flat-eight never reached production, but it’s clear that the Zuffenhausen automaker knows what they’re doing.

The new engine will supposedly displace 4.0L for a rating of over 600hp and 400 lb-ft of torque–if you thought their flat-six sounds amazing, we can’t even imagine how epic this new eighter will sound.

The 988 is said to utilize a completely new architecture with lots and lots of aluminum. Design wise, it’ll be inspired by the epic 918 Spyder. A launch time is speculated to happen sometime in 2017, followed by a completely new lineup of Boxsters, 911s, and Caymans.
