Report: Volkswagen’s Golf R400 Concept gets the green light to our surprise

When Volkswagen revealed their seriously potent 400hp Golf R400 Concept at this year’s Beijing Auto Show, they explicitly said that there are no plans for production in their press release. But because intentions aren’t solidified by Medusa, things can always change. And apparently, we’ve all shouted loud enough for Volkswagen to give the concept a green light, according to CARandDRIVER.

After speaking directly with VW’s Heinz-Jakob Neusser, C/D learned of the apparent good news, except for when the production R400 will officially be announced and produced.

But either way, should all hold true, the world will be seeing a 400hp GTI powered by a seriously potent 2.0L turbocharged TFSI four-banger engine (we can already anticipate the epic turbo lag unless they use a sequential twin-setup). Torque is rated at 332 lb-ft for all four-wheels to manage for a 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds.

We’re a fan of sleepers here at egmCarTech, so naturally, we’re excited for this.
