Porsche’s CEO, Matthias Muller, has made it pretty clear that he’s none too excited by the number of customers that have jumped onto the Tesla bandwagon. Porsche’s Panamera hybrid may be a bit more dear than Tesla Model S, but the two are fighting for the same market. Porsche’s 918 may be miles ahead of Tesla’s Lotus-based experiment, but it does not offer the range of the Model S.
Muller recently related to Auto und Sport that he has little interest in a range extended EV, but is principally interested in seeing an EV with a range of at least 300 km or 186 miles. Though Porsche nailed a few EV Boxster prototypes together in the past, the best they could manage was a range of 107 miles with a 245 horsepower, 398 ft-lb electric powertrain. If Porsche can put down something substantially more solid than that with that output, then there’s no reason why they could not woo Tesla’s customers.
