Report: Hyundai may still be on track with BMW 3-Series competitor

A new report is in that refreshes one of the biggest rumors in the mainstream market: word that Hyundai could be producing a rear-wheel drive sedan built to compete directly against the BMW 3-Series. After speaking with AutomotiveNews, Hyundai Motor America’s CEO Dave Zuchowski said that a new luxury model will be built to be sold alongside the Genesis and the Equus.

Zuchowski didn’t give specifics, though a compact luxury sports sedan has been in Hyundai’s rumors for quite some time, given their success in other markets. Previous reports and rumors have suggested a launch date sometime in 2016 with the choice of a 2.0L direct-injected four-banger or a 3.3L V6.

In the same report, Zuchowski also hinted at a potential entry-level crossover as others jump on the bandwagon to fill in more niches. Though again, specifics were declined.
