Report: GM readying their own aluminum bodied pickups

Ford set the stage with their latest 2015 F150 pickup, which sports a revolutionary all-aluminum body to help save weight. That said, it was only a matter of time before the other two of the Detroit Big Three followed suit. Next up will supposedly be the General, who according to The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, just tied the knot with two aluminum supply companies: Alcoa Inc. and Novelis Inc.

The new aluminum bodied GM trucks are due for the next generation, which promise to reduce overall weight in an effort to increase fuel economy. Comparatively speaking, Ford was able to shave off 700lbs from the outgoing model.

General Motors originally began considering aluminum for their pickups back in 2008 but ditched the idea due to economic woes and financial troubles. The next generation trucks should be ready by late 2018, which gives Ford a huge advantage in sales.
