Report: Mitsubishi Outlander Sport may get upgraded powerplant, CVT

Mitsubishi’s Outlander is a prime example of an offering that is more than adequate in the US market, but it’s in a crowded market of more than adequate offerings; and for a small car company that seems to be losing the US market every day, this isn’t really enough.

Yes, they have the Evo and the Lancer, but the Outlander is really their only big oar in the water otherwise.  Mitsubishi North America’s Executive Vice President, Don Swearingen suggested in an interview with Automotive News that the car may be getting a 2.4 liter four and a new CVT, likely boosting the ‘oomph factor and reducing fuel consumption.

Also coming down the pipe may be an alliance with Renault-Nissan; the two groups are in talks and there may be some platform sharing and other collaboration which may boost Mitsubishi’s presence here and elsewhere.
