Report: Porsche dips toe in water of the sports sedan world

Porsche has the Panamera, their idea of a 4-door 911, so what they are thinking of doing now, may be another example of that, or it may be an even tinier crossover. Porsche’s boss, Matthias Müller, quipped “Speaking very frankly, I can say this is one of many ideas we have, to build a car below Panamera… But it would be a difficult decision, because Porsche has just taken a huge step getting into the Macan market — not just developing the car but doubling the factory capacity, including the body shop and paint shop. It has been a huge effort for the whole company.” This statement made in an interview with British car mag, Autocar, suggests that there are cogs turning and that journalists and car enthusiasts everywhere will soon be asking about further dilution of the Porsche name, not unlike what we learned this morning about the Macan.

The target market may be that of the BMW 5 series, which is a far cry from what might call a sports sedan, but in today’s market, it is still the benchmark. In other words, Porsche may be mulling another two-ton four door sedan or four door GT coupe that uses a high output engine, clever diffs, transmission and suspension to give the illusion of a tossable midsized sedan. It may be a while until this one comes to fruition, unless additional manufacturing facilities are built for the purpose.
