Report: Rolls-Royce to introduce a new Phantom for 2016, to be based off of BMW 7-Series

Rolls-Royce is working hard under BMW’s ownership as AutomotiveNews reports the ultra-luxury automaker might add to its model portfolio while the flagship Phantom gets redesigned for the 2014 model year.

According to the report, the Phantom will be based off of the BMW 7-Series and will use a lot of weight saving materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum. For those who need a little refresher, the current Phantom sedan weighs 5,840lbs sitting at the curb.

No exact weight reduction figures have been provided, but there’s also a supposed chance that BMW could supply the new Phantom with its xDrive all-wheel drive system. That’s not too unlikely if the new model is going to be based off of the next generation 7-Series.

Drophead and Coupe variants should follow as well. But there is also a chance that they could stick with a sedan only and expand the portfolio. \
