Report: Next gen 2015 Ford Mustang to lose 400lbs thanks to more aluminum

Some new developments surrounding the 2015 Ford Mustang have popped up thanks to Edmunds. And word is the new 2015 Ford Mustang will go on a rather dicey diet to improve fuel economy. But more so, the weight reduction will also allow for better performance and handling, because, well, weight reduction has more than one benefit.

“I know they are trying to remove a minimum of 400 pounds,” said internal source told Edmunds. “The big thing is that it will be a ‘smarter’ size.”

This apparently comes thanks to smaller dimensions for the new Mustang along with the use of lighter weight materials. Though Edmunds was also told not to expect any “exotic” materials. So we’re guessing that means not to expect materials like magnesium and carbon fiber since the source also said that Ford will use more aluminum.

The next generation Ford Mustang will be sold as a 2015 model, which marks a major point for Ford as the Mustang turns 50 years old next year. Expect a debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2014.
