Report: Audi working on a BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo fighter, to be called the A4 Vario

Word in the domestic German pipeline is that Audi is planning to expand the A4 lineup for the next generation by adding a new variant called the “Vario.”

It’s described to be based off of the long-wheelbase A4 that only sees China’s market and is intended to be a direct competitor to the BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo. The usual range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines are expected, with a top-end S4 donning a 3.0L V6 good for 340hp.

The base engines will range from a 1.4L to a 2.0L TFSI four-banger with standard cylinder deactivation. The diesels will reportedly be the usual mix of 2.0L TDI diesels producing 150hp or 184hp, with a top-end V6 TDI good for 218hp and 272hp.

A plug-in hybrid version will also be included and will use a 2.0L TFSI four-cylinder for its gasoline propulsion while the rest of the power is provided by an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Though a standard eight-speed automatic will still be the main drivetrain component. Additional electric motors will also be fitted to the rear axle to provide all-wheel drive. The motors are said to provide an extra 136hp combined.

As of now, rumor and speculation points to a launch date sometime in 2016.
