Reprot: Volkswagen Golf R to be most powerful regular production Golf ever, with 286hp

AutoCarUK reports that Volkswagen will launch up to seven new variants of this new generation Volkswagen Golf over the next 12 months. The range topper: the all new Golf R, which will don a whopping 286hp.

Other performance models of lesser caliber include the ever so famous GTI and the all new diesel version, the GTD model.

The Golf R is said to closely resemble Volkswagen’s upper branch cousin, the Audi S3 and with that 286hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, the Golf R will be the most powerful regular production Golf in history.

Channeling that power is a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic cog swapper, allowing the Golf R to hit 60 in just five seconds flat for a top run of 155 mph. That is one hot hatch… Planting that power to the grand is Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system made standard. Electronic torque-vectoring differentials are also included.

Volkswagen has also reportedly tuned the exhaust for a more inspirational exhaust note with some extra noise levels. The brakes have been upgraded as well, along with some weight saving moves within the bodywork and components.

Sales are expected to begin in 2014 after the Golf R’s full launch at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
