Report: Maserati Levante and Alfa Romeo SUVs to be built in Turin

Union sources in Turin, Italy spoke to AutomotiveNews Europe recently and have said that Fiat will be building its future Maserati and Alfa Romeo SUVs in Turin.

Set to debut in 2014, Maserati’s first SUV, the Levante, will go head to head with the Porsche Cayenne. Additionally, it will share many components with the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Alfa Romeo also has an SUV up their sleeve, which is said to debut in 2015. Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne openly expressed that he plans to transform Alfa Romeo into a global luxury brand to challenge Audi.

In lieu of a financial recession occurring in Europe, concern has grown for Fiat’s Mirafiori plant, which has only been running for a few days per month as of recent. However, Marchionne promised that future Maserati and Alfa Romeo models will be built there, though he didn’t specify which ones.

“I’ve made a commitment. We are not closing Mirafiori,” Marchionne previously said in a recent press conference in Italy. “We will make luxury cars for both Maserati and for Alfa Romeo.”
