The Chevrolet Malibu is going under a quick mid-cylce refresh for release by next year – that’s just 18 months after the redesigned sedan made its launch.

GM CEO Dan Akerson said that the move comes after soft early sales and unflattering media reviews. I personally thought the new Malibu was quite a good looking midsize sedan (read my review here).

“We are going to do a midcycle enhancement, not dramatic, by this time next year,” Akerson told Automotive News. He said that the changes would focus on the front fascia but declined to give any details.

Even dealers have questioned GM whether the new Malibu can stand out in the mid-sized sedan market.

“I think it’s a good car. It’ll do OK,” Akerson said. “It is a tough segment and it’s one we need to be successful in. We’ll see how it plays out.”
