Report: Audi R8 e-tron project halted, could be killed altogether

Audi’s R8 e-tron project has been in the works since the concept made its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Since then, Audi has come a long way with the R8 e-tron returning an impressive Nurburgring lap time of 8:09 earlier this summer.

Well, it seems like things have taken a difference course. According to CARandDRIVER, the project has apparently been put on hold. Word has it that Audi’s new R&D chief Wolfgang Durheimer has put a stop to the project, which was supposed to launch early 2013. Insiders say that it’s possible that the entire project could be killed.

What’s the issue? CARandDRIVER says that the biggest obstacle is the cost of batteries.
