Yesterday, we heard that Mazda is considering a coupe and an all-wheel-drive trim level of the Mazda6. Today, we hear that Mazda is looking at doing a performance version and bringing back the MazdaSpeed6.

Project manager Hiroshi Kajiyama, said that “There is a high potential for this, and it would be helpful to the brand.”

Kajiyama said that Mazda benchmarked the BMW 3-Series Audi A4 and the Volkswagen Passat during the development of the new Mazda6. Doing a performance version is the next logical step.

The 2014 Mazda6 is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. early next year and will be powered by a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine that makes 189 horsepower.
