Report: BMW 3-Series GT pilot production begins in Leipzig, to debut at Paris show

AutoCarUK reports that BMW has just recently kicked off production of its upcoming 3-Series GT at their plant in Leipzig. The 3-Series GT will be the first new 3-series with a hatchback bodystyle since the short-lived E36-based compact from the mid-1990s.

Based on the long-wheelbase 3-Series meant for the Chinese market, the internally designated F34 3-Series GT will essentially follow the same footsteps as the 5-Series GT and its related lineup.

Expect a higher roofline, a wider waistline, and four frameless doors with a heavily raked rear end.

Exact details have yet to be released, but we could expect to see BMW’s normal mix of four- and six-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines found in the normal 3-Series. There has been no word as to whether or not North America will see the 3-Series GT.
