Report: 600-hp BMW M1 successor on the way

New reports coming out of the UK suggest that BMW is working on a successor for the M1 with a 600-hp turbocharged V8. The model will go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi R8 and the Mercedes-Benz SLS.

The model, which will be a mid-engined two-seater, should hit roads by 2016.

The engine will be a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 making 600-hp. The body will be built of an ultra-lightweight carbon fiber body, which should bring the weight around 2755 pounds.

Design wise, the model will be inspired by the M1 Hommage concept that made its debut at the 2008 Concours d’Eleganza on the shores of Lake Como, Italy.
