Report: Acura designer admits ‘the beak’ grille is a bit polarizing

I don’t think I’d be wrong if I said that Acura’s don’t really turn heads while driving down the street. However, the company’s new global design chief, Toshinobu Minami, is here to change all that. Hired by Honda’s president Takanobu Ito to spice up the company’s luxury brand, Minami has a huge challenge ahead of him to spice up Acura’s appeal.

Minami says that one polarizing feature about Acura, dubbed ‘the beak’ by critics, is here to stay – although it will be modified somewhat. He admitted that while the grille may have gone too far in the past, it is apparently starting to grow on people.

“We concede that we went a little overboard at some points,” Minami said. “We actually had pretty bad feedback on this initially from different directions. But we are not going to buckle under that pressure.”

Most recently, the V-shaped beak grille appeared on the ILX entry-level sedan and the NSX concept.

Personally, I think they should work on revamping Acura’s overall design theme instead of just focusing on the grille.
