Report: Alfa Romeo’s “baby 8C,” the 4C is ahead of schedule, to debut summer of 2013

Alfa Romeo has been seeking to swipe auto enthusiasts off their feet again, like they did with the drop-dead gorgeous 8C Competizione, by producing a less expensive, baby version dubbed the 4C. However, Alfa said themselves that they didn’t project the “baby 8C” to debut any earlier than 2014.

Word in the rumormill now has it that the Italian brand is actually ahead of schedule with the 4C and will be debuting it in production form next summer in 2013.

Expected to only weigh 1,870lbs—yes, you read that correctly, thanks to a carbon fiber body—the 4C is also said to be produced at “two global production sites,” both of which hint at North America and Europe.

To add, the 4C, along with the equally carbon fiber bodied Guilia, are described to be cars that are “vital to Alfa Romeo’s relaunch,” specifically in North America. The 4C will provide as a halo car for the brand.

Other insiders at Fiat SpA also apparently said that the 4C’s turbocharged 1.8L four-pot will produce 296hp and will also be used in other Fiat Group models, such as some future Dodge, Chrysler, Lancia, and Jeep models. However, those versions of the four banger will be detuned for better fuel economy.
