Alright – big BMW news going around today is that the next-generation BMW M3 will be powered by an inline 6-cylinder engine. The news comes from BimmerPostNews, who recently confirmed the powertrain offering in the next M3 with BMW North America’s new President, Mr. Ludwig Willisch.

That kills earlier speculation that the next M3 would feature a V6 layout instead of a inline 6-cylinder. Mr. Willisch did say that a V6 setup was being considered but was eventually ruled out
No word whether the engine will feature two or three turbos but expect it to produce somewhere in the ballpark of 450-hp.
Overall, the next BMW M3 will indeed be lighter, faster, more efficient and more powerful than the outgoing model.
