2014 Chevrolet SS rear-wheel-drive performance sedan confirmed, coming late 2013

Chevrolet SS NASCAR Prototype

After a bunch of rumors, Chevrolet has confirmed that it will be adding a V8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan to its lineup. Known as the Chevrolet SS, the model will also become Chevy’s next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will debut at the 2013 Daytona 500.

Chevrolet said that the new SS model will be a 2014 model year vehicle and will hit dealers in late 2013. It will be a limited production vehicle.

The Chevrolet SS will be based on GM’s rear-wheel-drive architecture that underpins the Chevrolet Camaro and Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it.”

I for one, really can’t wait.
