Volkswagen is planning a crossover that is even smaller than the Tiguan as a part of a plan to expand its crossover lineup, according to design boss Walter de’ Silva who spoke with Automotive News Europe.
In order to appeal to a wider audience, Volkswagen wants to add crossovers of different sizes with different design elements. We heard last month the Volkswagen is even planning a 3-row 7-passenger crossover to compete with the likes of the Honda Pilot.
“Crossovers demand is expanding from mature markets to emerging markets and we have to cover this growing appetite with a multilateral expansion in the offer of our brands,” said de’ Silva.
V-dub doesn’t have a small SUV/crossover, which was Europe’s fast-growing segment in the first half of 2012 with sales up 81 percent to 112,530 units.
de’Silva also said that the new Cross Coupe Concept is not a preview of the next Tiguan as we were first led to believe. Instead, the Cross Coupe Concept hints at that smaller crossover below the Tiguan.
