Hyundai Veloster Turbo to debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show

We’ve been eagerly waiting on Hyundai to confirm the a turbo version of the new Veloster hatchback. During a recent announcement that the Korean automaker will be producing a new 1.6 liter T-GDI Gamma engine that produces 204-hp, our hopes hit a all-time high for a more powerful Veloster, which is currently offered with a 138-hp 1.6 liter GDI Gamma.

Hyundai CEO John Krafcik has confirmed at the 2011 SEMA Show in Vegas that the turbo Veloster will make its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and will go on sale later next year.

Power for the Hyundai Veloster Turbo will come from the same 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo in the Optima SX Turbo. The engine produces 208 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 to 5,000 rpm. The engine is ULEV-2 certified.

Refresher: Power for the 2012 Hyundai Veloster comes from a 1.6 liter GDI Gamma direct-injection gasoline engine making 138-hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. EPA estimated fuel-economy comes in at 28/40/32 mpg (city/highway/combined) with the six speed manual and 29/38/32 mpg with the DCT. Prices start at $17,300.
