Mini Cooper S under investigation by NHTSA after engine fires

2007 Mini Cooper S

The Mini Cooper S is under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration following 12 reports of engine fires, including five which resulted in the total Cooper being totally burned to the ground.

The NHTSA announced the investigation on Saturday saying that in 8 of the complaints fires occurred when the car was parked and turned off.

NHTSA said that the probe includes about 36,000 Cooper S models from the 2007 and 2008 model.

The regulator said the “complaints show an apparent increasing trend with most complaints received within the past year.”
