Vauxhall VXR8 sport sedan wins mpg marathon award

The Fleet World MPG Marathon had an unexpected competitor take the champion title. For the Eco-marathon, where diesels, hybrids, and the like go up against each other, its a bit surprising that a 432-hp car was even in the race. What’s no so surprising is that the Vauxhall VXR8 won with that kind of power in this segment.

The 6.2-liter V8 was not the most fuel efficient, but for official fuel consumption it showed the most improvement. Fuel consumption was at 17.4 mpg originally, and was decreased by 53% to 26.7mpg.

Chris Mooney, Top Gear Online editor was behind the wheel for the 2 day long run along with Vauxhall archivist Andrew Duerden. Mooney says “It just goes to show that the person behind the wheel can make a massive difference to fuel costs and carbon emissions..And of course, that a 6.2-liter V8 is a very sensible choice of engine in the right hands.”

Pretty impressive.
