Rumor: Chevrolet working on a competitor to Cobra Jet Mustang drag racer
Every now and then Ford will produce a special edition Mustang specifically designed and built for drag racing. It’s called the Mustang Cobra Jet and the latest edition, which launches in 2012, features a revised 5.4L Modular V8 good for 430hp. Additionally, it only weighs 3,200lbs for a serious power-to-weight ratio.
However, Ford is only accompanied by Chrysler in this particular niche with Chrysler featuring a Dodge Challenger specifically designed for the same job. The only one left out of the Big Three is Chevrolet and rumor has it that the General is no longer going to let this one slide to Chrysler and Ford.

At this year’s SEMA show in Las Vegas, Chevy hinted that they will debut their answer with a Stock Camaro Eliminator. However, not many details have been released. It will most likely be illegal for street use much like the Mustang CJ is and will feature beefed up suspension, brakes and chassis. And even though the Camaro SS’s naturally aspirated LS3 6.2L V8 matches the power output of the Mustang’s 5.4L V8, GM’s Performance Parts Division has some tricks up their sleeve to make it even more powerful.
Much of this is speculation and we’ll probably see more of news regarding this special Camaro as time carries on.
