Cylinder shut-off technology isn’t something new but Volkswagen will be the first company to introduce the cylinder shut-off technology on 4-cylinder engines.
The technology will debut on the company’s 1.4 liter turbocharged engines in German early next year. The system, known as cylinder shut-off (CSO), could increase fuel-efficiency by as much as 17 percent. No word when or if the feature will be offered in the United States.
When the system is activated, the intake and exhaust valves for cylinders 2 and 3 are shut down, VW said in the statement.
Volkswagen has been using range of new technologies to get its fuel-economy range in-line with tougher stringent fuel-economy and emissions standards in both the U.S. and Europe. The German automaker is looking at increasing its clean-diesel models in the U.S and is planning an electric-version of the Golf for 2014.
