2011 Frankfurt: Subaru BRZ Prologue Architecture II revealed, production starts spring 2012

While Toyota continues to show its 1 billionth concept version of the FT-86 at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Subaru is showing the second variant of its rear-wheel-drive coupe that is currently under development with Toyota. Known as the ‘SUBARU BRZ PROLOGUE – BOXER Sports Car Architecture II ,’ the model outlines the production model due in spring 2012.

“‘SUBARU BRZ PROLOGUE’ embodies the technology concept of the ‘SUBARU BRZ’, an all-new rear-wheel drive (RWD) sports car, currently under joint development with Toyota Motor Corporation,” Subaru said in a statement. “Built around Subaru’s core technology – the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine, a new platform was developed in order to extract the maximum performance potential required of the RWD sports car.”

Power for the Subaru BRZ comes from a 2.0 liter Subaru Boxer engine, which was exclusively designed for the new sports car. Subaru reworked the bore and stroke and adopted Toyota’s direct injection and port injection technology.

Will Subaru fans accept the brand’s first rear-wheel-drive car? Only time will tell.
