Report: Porsche 4-cylinder to power 550 Spyder successor, Boxster and Cayman

So it’s been forever since we’ve been hearing rumors about Porsche doing a 4-banger and a new entry-level sports car. Today, we have a new report shedding some light on Porsche’s 4-cylinder plans. According to AutoWeek, high-ranking Porsche officials at the company’s Weissach research and development center in Germany have confirmed engineering work is moving-forward on a 4-cylinder horizontally opposed gasoline engine.

The new boxer engine will first debut in a mid-engined entry-level sports cars that is internally known as a spiritual successor to the iconic 550 Spyder. It will eventually make its way under the hood of the third-generation Boxster and second-generation Cayman.

Two versions of the new 4-cylinder engine will be offered including a base 2.0 liter and a larger 2.5 liter, which is said to make up to 380-hp.
