2012 Mazda CX-5 coming to U.S. in early 2012, will cost around $20,000, will get diesel option in 2014

The new 2012 Mazda CX-5, which will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show later this month, will go on sale in the United States early next year. It will make its stateside debut at the 2011 LA Auto Show in November.

The 2012 Mazda CX-5 is 178.7 inches long, making it 5 inches smaller than the CX-7. It sits on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, which is two inches shorter than the CX-7.

A source said that the 2012 Mazda CX-5 will be offered with a diesel option in 2014. Hideaki Tanaka, manager of the CX-5 program, said that prices for the base Mazda CX-5 will start around $20,000.

The 2012 Mazda CX-5 will compete with the likes of the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan and Kia Sportage.
