Volkswagen seriously considering giving Bulli Concept green light for ‘heritage range’

This past year, Volkswagen has been showing off its Bulli concept, which is basically a hip and modern take on the original Volkswagen Microbus. Thanks to a lot of positive feedback, VW’s head honchos claimed that they are “very serious” about giving the Bulli electric MPV concept the green light for production. The Bulli would sell next to the Beetle in Volkswagen’s propose “heritage range.”

Thanks to some hints by an inside source, word is that Volkswagen strongly believes that the Bulli concept could instantly become a cult car, especially in US where the original Microbus is a bit of an icon.

“As a designer, I am convinced by this idea,” says group design chief Walter de’Silva. “We don’t have a space for another conventional MPV, but this one would be desirable on a different level, combining practicality with the heritage appeal.”

If Volkswagen AG were to put the Bulli into production, it would be built in Puebla, Mexico using VAG’s latest modular platform and would start production sometime in 2013.
