Video: BMW i3 and BMW i8 hanging out in the real world

We’ve seen all the details, press images and press video footage on the new BMW i3 and BMW i8 models. What we haven’t seen are real life encounters with the models from the new BMW i brand… until now.

A YouTuber apparently caught both models in real life during a photo shoot somewhere in Chicago and managed to film two quick videos.

Refresher:

  • BMW i3: Power for the BMW i3 comes from an electric-motor that sits on the rear axle and produces 170-hp with a maximum torque of 184 lb-ft. That gives the BMW i3 Concept the ability to go from 0 to 37 mph in under 4 seconds and from 0 to 62 mph in less than 8 seconds. The single-speed gearbox sends power to the rear wheels and keeps sending it until the i3 hits a top speed of 93 mph. On a full charge, the BMW i3 Concept can travel a total range of 80 to 100 miles. The battery can be fully recharged in 6 hours from a standard power socket and can reach 80 percent charge in just one hour if you use the high-speed charger.
  • BMW i8: Power for the BMW i8 Concept comes from a modified electric-motor from the i3. It drives the front axle while a 1.5 liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine making 220-hp and 221 lb-ft of torque moves the rear axle. Together, the system produced 349-hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a twin-speed transmission, the BMW i8 runs from 0 to 62 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. On a full charge of its lithium-ion battery, the BMW i8 provides all-electric driving range of approximately 20 miles. While no total range has been provided, sources say that BMW i8 is capable of going 400 miles on a full tank of gas and full charge.
