Mercedes-Benz quietly kills off V12 SL65 AMG, 2013 model in the works

Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series

Mercedes-Benz will be quietly discontinuing its V12 SL-Class models to make way for a some new models. For example, an SL600 is not available for a 2011 year and the SL65 AMG will be equally getting the axe next year.

The Stuttgart brand says that they are phasing the V12 SLs in order to make way for the next generation SL. Other speculation also says that the top dog SL65 AMG’s sales interfere with those of the SLS, which weighs less and is a more hardcore sports car but is priced nearly the same.

There’s no exact word as to whether Mercedes-Benz will discontinue their V12s for the foreseeable future. But with the recent gentlemen’s agreement involving new CAFE requirements, it doesn’t seem unlikely as Mercedes would most likely replace them with forced-induced V8s just like everyone else. Could this be the end of the famous Mercedes 600 V12 nameplate?

Let’s hope not.
