Japanese automaker Honda, which is struggling to recover from the devastating earthquake in Japan, has told its U.S. dealers to honor discount offers on cars they do not have in stock.

“We know we’re going to have low inventories on some models — Civic is the perfect example,” Honda spokesman Gary Robinson said. “What we don’t want to do is just send those people on their way without taking care of them.”

Robinson said that the offer is not available on vehicles built in Japan, such as the Honda Fit and the Honda Insight.

Honda’s Acura brand is also offering a similar inventive.

Robinson said that the discounts are offered to boost sales of existing inventory. Dealers typically don’t offer promotional prices on cars they do not have on the lot.
