Hesitant towards buying a small car due to safety concerns? Well, don’t stress it too much because the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says that small cars are getting safer as more models than ever before receive the top safety rating from the insurance agency.
The IIHS said that 6 of the 12 small cars it recently tested earned its Top Safety Pick rating. Those models include the new 2012 Ford Focus, Honda Civic, 2011 Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Juke, Lexus CT 200h and the Toyota Prius.
Combined with previously tested small cars – including the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf, the total number of Top Safety Picks for small cars comes in at 22. That is quite a change from the 2006 model year, where just three cars received a top safety rating.
“Each time we’ve introduced a new test, automakers have stepped up and improved designs,” said David Zuby, the institute’s chief research officer.
