NHTSA investigating Ford Freestyle crossover over unintended ‘lunging’

2005 Ford Freestyle

For all cars sold in the United States (and we mean all the cars sold in our 50 states), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received 15,174 complaints involving unintended acceleration from 2000 through March 2010. Toyota recalled millions of vehicles worldwide since 2009 because of the similar flaws.

The NHTSA announced today that it is investigating the Ford Freestyle crossover after receiving 238 complaints about unintended ‘lunging’ at low speeds when the driver’s foot isn’t on the accelerator.

The NHTSA said it is looking into 170,000 units of the Freestyle from model year 2005 to 2007, after 18 crashes attributed to the defect, with one resulting in a minor injury.

“We will fully cooperate with the government as they review this matter,” Ford spokesman Susan Krusel said.
