While we weren’t expecting much from the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, we were pretty much blown away when we went to catch the flick on opening day. Following its box-office crushing performance last week in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, Fast Five opened in North America this past weekend and swamped the competition.
Fast Five raked in an outstanding $83.6 million during its opening weekend in North America.
Comparatively, in 2009 Fast and Furious (the fourth part in the series) opened with a $71 million weekend and set the record for any film ever opening in April. Fast Five is easily the biggest opening for any film in 2011 so far – even bigger than the combined numbers of Rio ($39.2 million) and Hop ($37.5 million) which had been 2011’s top two until Fast Five.
