Cadillac planning new convertible to slot between ATS, CTS

Following the death of the Cadillac XLR after the 2009 model year, Caddy is planning to re-enter the convertible market with a different approach.

Unlike the XLR, a folding-hardtop roadster that shared much of its architecture with the Chevrolet Corvette, the new Cadillac convertible will be offered at a lower price point and will be based on the upcoming Alpha platform. The Alpha platform will underpin the 2013 Cadillac ATS and the next-generation CTS – however, the new convertible won’t be an open-top ATS. Instead, it the new convertible will be position between the ATS and the CTS and will have its own unique styling.

Like the Audi A5 Convertible, the Cadillac convertible will be a soft-top. Engine choices for the new Cadillac convertible will range from a turbocharged 4-cylinder to V6 and V8 powertrains. Look out for the new Cadillac convertible to appear sometime in late 2013 as a 2014 model year.
