While Saab may be struggling to keep production of its current models going due to payment issues with suppliers, it has not stopped development on new models. According to sources, Saab is lining up a bid to buy the rights to the outgoing Mini platform for a new compact Saab.

Insiders say that Saab is focused on securing the rights to the outgoing Mini platform that would all it to compete in the premium compact car segment. Saab has already secured a deal to buy Mini 1.6L turbo engine.

BMW will phase out the current Mini R56-generation platform in late 2012. The new Mini platform, codenamed F56, will be based on a new front-drive platform developed by BMW in Munich. The platform  will also be used for BMW’s own Audi A1 competitor.
