According to those unnamed sources that are familiar with the matter, Mitsubishi plans on shifting a new family of vehicles to its Illinois plant within the next two years. We’re not sure what the vehicles will be but they will be built on the platform of the Outlander, Outlander Sport and the Lancer sedan. All those models are currently built in Japan.
Mitsubishi currently builds the Galant, Endeavor, Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder at its Normal, Illinois plant. According to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, all those vehicles will be phased-out by the fiscal year that starts April 2013.
A Mitsubishi Motors North America’s manufacturing division spokesman called the report “speculation.”
The Japanese automaker sold a total of 55,683 units in the United States last year, up 3 percent from 2009.
